Child and Family Play Therapy
As a young child and later as an adolescent, Jonathan faced many challenges, experiencing both the positive and negative aspects of the helping professions and the school systems here in North Carolina. At a young age, he experienced grief related symptoms which were exacerbated with a diagnosis of ADHD as well as a learning disability. As Thull became oppositional toward authority he began struggling in multiple settings. Later during high-school years he was given other labels such as anxiety, sleep disorder, depression.
Jonathan also has a unique personality with many quirks and has been told by some clinicians that he might have a toe on the Autism Spectrum. But none of those labels mattered to him. What did matter was that with the right support he was able to find ways to compensate and adapt to his environment. He turned his disabilities into his greatest assets! It was by finding a way to harness his passions and focus his strengths that he found direction and success in life. Although the path to achieve his goals was difficult he persevered through difficult times. And it is those experiences that gives him the tools to help all of his clients and their families find happiness, balance, and greater purpose and direction in life.

Tele-Play Therapy |
Tele-therapy has been around a long time but was not as common pre-covid. However, it was easy to see that for Jonathan‘s clients, it was more effective. He found that by utilizing an array of gaming platforms he was able to better connect with every client. Thull says that he primarily utilizes Minecraft, Roblox, and game pigeon. These games allow you to access many different types of games while doing therapy. He went on to say, "We set up two devices and play games while we talk about life and solve problems! For some clients we write poetry or lyrics and for others it’s drawing or other creative activities. In the play room we utilize physical toys to enter into a child’s World, but in the same way I found that we can also use the virtual world."
Parenting and Attachment
Whether it is in the context of individual child therapy or family therapy, it is necessary to simultaneously work on parenting and attachment for ALL clients!
